“But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.”

Looking back to the life we once lead brings nothing but sorrow and regret. In the case of Lot’s wife, it brought divine judgment. Why was God so harsh? In verse 17, the angels gave them this warning: “Escape for your life! Do not look anywhere behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.” There is one thing clear—sin, all sin, leads to death. There are no exceptions. “The wages of sin is death,” (Romans 6:23). Looking back toward her old life brought destruction to Lot’s wife.

We have been delivered from our past through what Jesus did on the cross for us. Our past no longer has any hold on our lives. We are free! We must now stand fast in the freedom we have, and not be entangled again in our old bondage, (Galatians 5:1). Dwelling on our past sins and mistakes does not bring us life, only death. Let’s determine to live in the now, live in Jesus and look forward to the glory that is to come.

Father, help me to be looking forward, upward and onward to the life you have called me to in Jesus. Help me keep my eyes always fixed on him, (Hebrews 12:2) and not on my past.
