And God spake all these words, saying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before me.
Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God
EXODUS 20:1-3,5a KJV

(Read Exodus 20:1-17)

The Lord makes it completely clear to the Israelites that it was He, the Lord, who brought them out of Egypt from the heavy hand of bandage and slavery. Not another god, not Moses, not Aaron, but God and God alone! After that the Lord gave them a specific set of rules to live by. How many times after God brings us out of situations and sets us free do we turn right around and forget it was God who delivered us, and over time begin to replace Him with other things. We call on Him when we need Him, and when we don't, go about our way, just like the Israelites.

There are so many “things” that this world has to keep our attention and focus away from our God, the One who delivers us out of bondage. Whatever we are giving more time and attention to than our Lord is considered an idol and that grieves the Lord greatly. He is a jealous God.

Lord, thank You for delivering me out of bondage and from everything that is not of You. Please keep my heart and my eyes on You and when I begin to look any other direction, remind me that it’s Your love I need and nothing else. Amen.
