"Now when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them by the way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was near; for God said, "The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt." Hence God led the people around by the way of the wilderness to the Red Sea; and the sons of Israel went up in martial array from the land of Egypt." EXODUS 13:17-18

(Read Exodus 13:17-22)

When the Israelites left Egypt, there was a shortcut available through the land of the Philistines. However, God knew that way wouldn't be good for them, so He led them the long way around through the wilderness. Just like the Israelites, we often want shortcuts in life too. God has better plans though. Sometimes He takes us on what seems like a completely unnecessary detour through the “wilderness," but it always leads to something better than the shortcut we initially had in mind.

It takes a lot of faith to go through the wilderness of life rather than the shortcut, but I don't want the easy way. I want the God way. In what ways are you trying to take a shortcut when God has something amazing planned for you on the other side of the wilderness?

God, give me faith to trust You when my eyes can't see and my mind can't understand what You're doing. Help me to see things from Your perspective and know that whatever You have for me is better than anything I could come up with on my own.
